Denver Car Insurance Requirements

Posted on November 2 2009

Denver, CO has a minimum 25/50/15 requirement for car insurance coverage. This means that legally you require the minimum following coverage:

  • $25,000 in Individual Bodily Injury Liability (BIL) for one person
  • $50,000 Total Bodily Injury Liability per incident
  • Property Damage Liability (PDL) to a minimum of $15,000.

Colorado also has a provisional requirement that your car insurance include coverage for uninsured and underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) to cover medical and other expenses if you are hit by a driver without adequate auto insurance.  In Denver, CO, insurers are required to offer UM/UIM to the same amount as the BIL limits you select. This coverage can be waived but only if you do so in writing.  Most drivers in Denver do actually choose to add such coverage due to the peace of mind it offers and it’s relatively low increase to your premiums (if any at all).

You may also want to consider the following additional coverage:

  • Medical payments coverage (Med Pay, or MPC) – Auto insurers in Denver are required to offer you $5,000 in coverage and this will automatically be added to your premium unless you waive it in writing.
  • Collision – Though not required by law may find your bank insists on it before they approve any auto loan. You can offset the costs by adding a deductible on this coverage.
  • Comprehensive covers your incase it is stolen or damaged in ways that don’t involve a collision e.g. fire, falling objects, earthquake etc. Again, though this is not required by law your bank my insist on it to qualify for an auto loan.

These figures are really just the legal minimum that you would need to drive your car in Denver, under most circumstances however you would want to increase your coverage above this minimum value. According to the Insurance Information Institute it is recommended that you have around $100,000 of bodily injury protection per person and $300,000 per incident. The issue is that with so many higher value cars on the road and so many uninsured and under insured drivers it really won’t take much for a car accident to run in to tens of thousands of dollars in damage.  Without sufficient cover you may not be able to cover the claim. Aim to get as much cover as you can realistically afford to pay and do consider adding  uninsured and under insured drivers coverage. By shopping around and comparing quotes on this basis you can be sure to find the best deals.

Whatever you choose it is definitely worth paying a little more for additional coverage and it normally doesn’t increase your premium significantly. Compare Denver car insurance quotes today for the best deals around.
